Moonrise Kingdom sets box office record

Moonrise Kingdom set a box office record over the Memorial Day weekend.

The independent movie starring Tilda Swinton, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton and Bill Murray was only released four theatres in New York and Los Angeles over the American holiday.

Despite the limited availability, the film raked in $523,006 from ticket sales which is an amazing $130,752 per-screen average.

Focus Features executive James Schamus released a statement saying how proud he was at the film’s success.

“Moonrise is a story of love’s improbable triumph, and for Wes Anderson and his team a labour of love from start to finish,” it read.

“How wonderful it is to congratulate him, on behalf of everyone at Focus, for this remarkable, record-breaking opening.”

The film beat the previous record holder, Dreamgirls, which had an average of $126,317 from its three debut locations six years ago.

The film had made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival two weeks ago. It centres around two pre-teens who run away together leading to a search party being launched to try and find them.
