Safe House conquers box office
Safe House unexpectedly topped the US box office over the weekend.
The action mystery starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds was trailing in third place on Friday, but went on to earn $24 million in its second week in theatres.
The feature has raked in $78.3 million since its release 10 days ago and is expected to exceed $100 million in profits within the next few weeks. Should the film earn this amount, it would be the fourth movie starring Denzel that has garnered such grand profits.The Vow came in close second this weekend with $23.6 million. The romantic drama starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams has earned $85.5 in domestic sales since its debut last weekend. The film’s production budget was $30 million and it is expected to tally in a total of over $100 million in worldwide ticket sales by the end of this week.Fantasy adventure Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance was third this week earning $22 million in its debut. Nicolas Cage stars in this sequel of the 2007 film Ghost Rider. Spirit of Vengeance earned significantly less in its first week than it’s prequel, as the original film had profits of $45 million four years ago.Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s Journey 2: The Mysterious Island slid from third to fourth place this weekend with box office takings of $20 million.
