Tron sequel boosted by animation development

Writer Edward Kitsis says that animation technology opened up a world of new things on the upcoming Tron sequel.

Tron: Uprising is the made-for-TV follow-up to the 2010 hit movie and will introduce new characters, more of the popular animated vehicles and an expanded “mythology”.

Developed by Kitsis and his Tron: Legacy partner Adam Horowitz, the sequel is set to screen on Disney XD this summer.

Edward explained that the limitless opportunities of animation allowed them to make the next instalment even more exciting.

“The fun thing about animation is all the stuff we couldn’t afford in [Tron: Legacy], either because they were financially or technologically prohibitive, we can now do because it’s animated,” he told US publication LA Times.

Tron: Legacy told the story of a boy who ends up inside the digital world his father designed, named The Grid. He encounters his father's creations turned bad and finds a unique ally who was born inside the digital domain.

Tron: Uprising will take a different angle and look at the programmes that inhabit The Grid.

Main character Beck will be voiced by Elijah Wood, who becomes the unlikely leader of a digital revolution.

New digital vehicles have been designed for the franchise and include the quad-bike like Light Crawlers and a Light Rail, which Kitsis calls “basically the coolest train you’ve ever seen — it goes upside down.”

The writer also revealed further details about the storyline.

“What happens when you find yourself occupied by a force that is not in your best interest – how do you fight back? [The Grid is] essentially a frontier town,” he said.

Mandy Moore is also involved and music will once again be provided by French dance duo Daft Punk.
