For the first time in India, the production of coal has crossed one billion tonnes, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described it as a historical milestone. Coal and lignite production in the country has crossed one billion tonnes during 2023-24. India’s coal production in FY2024 has touched a new high of 997.4 million tonnes with an increase of 11.67% over the previous year, a statement issued by the Ministry of Coal said.
Coal production was 893.19 million tonnes in FY 2023. Coal production has been targeted at 1 billion tonnes, which is still not achieved. Prime Minister Modi said on this production of coal that it shows our commitment towards development.

PM Modi said on this achievement, “It ensures India’s path towards self-reliance.”
Coal Minister Prahlad Joshi shared this achievement through a post on social media platform X, in response to which Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his reaction late on Monday night.
For the first time ever, India’s coal and lignite production has crossed 1 Billion Tonne. Owing to favourable support from the Govt resulting in capacity expansion, coal+lignite production has grown by more than 70% over the last 10 years.

Coal Minister Prahlad Joshi said, this has happened for the first time, when the production of coal and lignite in India has crossed one billion tonnes. Capacity expansion in coal-lignite production has resulted in an increase of more than 70 percent in ten years due to the favorable support and efforts of the government.
According to the Coal Ministry, the quantity of coal imported for thermal power plants in the country has decreased by 36.69 percent between April 2023 and January 2024 and this has been possible due to increase in domestic coal production.
