Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has issued a public apology following backlash over a controversial remark he made concerning the Brahmin community. The incident began when Kashyap, responding to a social media user’s comment, stated, “I would urinate on Brahmins, any problem?” This comment, made amidst discussions about his upcoming film Phule, led to widespread outrage, legal complaints, and threats directed at his family.
In response, Kashyap took to Instagram to clarify his position. He emphasized that his apology was not for the entire post but specifically for the line that had been taken out of context and had incited hatred. He expressed concern over the safety of his family, stating, “No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, friends, and colleagues getting rape and death threats from the kingpins of sanskar.”
Kashyap further stated that he stands by his original comments and has no intention of retracting them. However, he appealed to critics to direct their anger solely at him and to spare his family from threats and abuse. He concluded his note by urging, “Brahmins, spare the women. These values are imbibed in our scriptures, too, except for Manuwaad. Decide which Brahmin you are. Rest, here’s an apology from me.”
The controversy has also led to legal action, with a complaint filed against Kashyap in Mumbai. The complainant highlighted concerns over Kashyap’s statements posing a potential threat to public order.
This incident has sparked a broader debate on freedom of expression and the boundaries of public discourse in India.
