Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who made a spectacular comeback last year with his blockbuster films Pathaan and Jawan, won the Best Actor award at the 24th International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) held in Abu Dhabi. Khan was recognized for his dual roles as father and son in Jawan. Meanwhile, Rani Mukerji was honored with the Best Actress award for her powerful performance in Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway.
The prestigious Best Picture award went to the Ranbir Kapoor-led Animal, while Vidhu Vinod Chopra won Best Director for his critically acclaimed film 12th Fail. In an interesting twist, Chopra had previously mentioned in interviews that awards held little importance to him, and that his main reason for attending the event was to support his wife, Anupama Chopra, editor of an international magazine. He emphasized that his focus is on creative fulfillment and making a meaningful impact through his work, both of which he achieved with 12th Fail, a film that has inspired not just IAS aspirants but people across various fields. His IIFA win, however, served as an added bonus.
Animal, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, created waves upon its release for its controversial depiction of violence and alleged misogyny, yet it dominated the IIFA 2024 stage, winning six awards. Anil Kapoor took home the Best Supporting Actor (Male) award, Bobby Deol was recognized for Best Performance in a Negative Role, and the film also claimed Best Music Direction, a collective honor shared by Pritam, Vishal Mishra, Manan Bhardwaj, Shreyas Puranik, Jaani, Bhupinder Babbal, Ashim Kemson, and Harshavardhan Rameshwar. Bhupinder Babbal also won Best Playback Singer (Male) for his hit track Arjan Vailly, while Siddharth Singh and Garima Wahal were awarded Best Lyrics.
Legendary actress Hema Malini received the Outstanding Achievement in Indian Cinema award, and Alizeh Agnihotri was named Debutant of the Year. Additionally, veteran actress Shabana Azmi, celebrating 50 years in the film industry, won Best Supporting Actress (Female) for her role in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.
