On June 2, 2025, the Chennai Mahila Court sentenced A. Gnanasekaran, a 37-year-old biryani vendor, to life imprisonment with a minimum of 30 years without remission for the sexual assault of a 19-year-old Anna University student in December 2024. The court also imposed a fine of ₹90,000.
The incident occurred on December 23, 2024, when Gnanasekaran trespassed onto the university campus, threatened the student and her male friend, and sexually assaulted her in a secluded area. He also recorded the assault and used the footage to blackmail the victims.
The case sparked widespread protests and political debates in Tamil Nadu. Opposition parties, including the AIADMK and BJP, accused the ruling DMK government of attempting a cover-up and alleged that the convict had political affiliations with the DMK.
In response, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin commended the swift investigation and conviction, highlighting the government’s commitment to women’s safety and justice.
The court’s decision to impose a life sentence without remission is seen as a strong message against sexual violence on campuses. The survivor continues her studies, with her identity protected by court orders.
