Mumbai, November 25 (UITV)- Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole has resigned from his post after the crushing defeat of the Maha Vikas Aghadi in the Maharashtra Assembly elections. However, the Congress high command has not yet accepted his resignation. This resignation has been given at a time when the Congress has performed its worst ever in the assembly elections.
The Congress and Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance in Maharashtra was badly defeated by the ruling NDA. Congress contested 103 seats, but won only 16 seats. This performance was quite poor compared to the 2019 assembly elections. However, Patole, who contested from Sakoli seat, was successful in saving his seat. Nana Patole won from Sakoli seat by a very narrow margin, just 208 votes, which was among the lowest margin victories of this election. In 2019, he won the same seat by a huge margin of 8,000 votes.
Many big leaders of Congress have faced defeat in this election. The defeat of veteran leaders like Balasaheb Thorat, Prithviraj Chavan, Vijay Wadettiwar, Yashomati Thakur and Manikrao Thakre is a big setback for the Congress.
Nana Patole took over as the President of Maharashtra Congress in 2021 and is known for his outspoken leadership. Before the election results, he had claimed that the Congress would lead the next Maha Vikas Aghadi government, but the results were contrary to his claim. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress won 13 seats under his leadership, but due to this poor performance in the assembly elections, he has submitted his resignation to the high command.
Under the Mahayuti alliance, the BJP won the most 132 seats. Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, which contested the assembly elections for the first time, won 55 seats. At the same time, the NCP led by Ajit Pawar won 41 seats. These results reflect the strong organization and strategy of the NDA, which weakened the Maha Vikas Aghadi.
The poor performance of the Congress and the defeat of top leaders have posed a big challenge for the party to strengthen the leadership and organization. Nana Patole’s resignation is an indication that there is a need for introspection within the party. It has become extremely important for the Congress to revive its base in an important state like Maharashtra.
The performance of the Congress in the Maharashtra Assembly elections is worrying for the party. Nana Patole’s resignation is a sign of taking responsibility for this defeat, but the party needs to make extensive reforms in the organization and work on strategy. The strong performance of the NDA has further weakened the position of the Congress in state politics, making the road ahead difficult for the party.
