The southwest monsoon has officially arrived in India, marking its earliest onset over the Indian mainland since 2009. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced that the monsoon reached Kerala on May 24, 2025, eight days ahead of the usual June 1 onset date. This early arrival is significant, as the last comparable early onset occurred on May 23, 2009

The monsoon’s early arrival is attributed to favorable atmospheric conditions, including surplus pre-monsoon rainfall, which have facilitated its swift progression. The IMD reports that the monsoon has already advanced into parts of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Northeastern India. This early onset is expected to benefit agricultural activities, particularly in southern and central regions, by allowing for earlier sowing and potentially higher crop yields .

In Bengaluru, the early monsoon is bringing cooler temperatures and increased rainfall. The current weather is cloudy with a temperature of 25°C (78°F). The forecast for the coming days indicates continued cloudy conditions with afternoon thunderstorms and temperatures ranging between 26°C to 30°C (79°F to 85°F).

The IMD predicts that the monsoon will continue to advance northward, with Andhra Pradesh expected to experience its onset by May 28 or 29 . This early and widespread onset of the monsoon is a positive development for India’s agriculture and water resources.
