On Monday, Trinamool Congress legislator Nirmal Ghosh appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the ongoing probe into the rape and murder case at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital. Ghosh, who is the MLA for the Panihati Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, was summoned by the CBI for questioning at their Salt Lake office in Kolkata.
The victim’s ancestral home falls within Panihati, where Ghosh represents the ruling party. According to sources, the CBI issued a notice to Ghosh early Monday morning, requesting his presence at their office as soon as possible. Responding promptly, the MLA arrived at the CBI office shortly after 11 a.m.
Sources familiar with the investigation revealed that Ghosh was present at R.G. Kar Medical College on the morning of August 9, shortly after the victim’s body was discovered in the hospital’s seminar hall. As the local MLA, Ghosh had reportedly accompanied the victim’s family to the hospital on the day of the incident, which has prompted the CBI to record his statement for clarity.
Ghosh was also reportedly present at the Panihati crematorium during the victim’s cremation. Investigators have obtained video footage from the crematorium, raising questions about the haste with which the body was cremated. Concerns have been raised that the victim’s parents had requested more time before the cremation, but their plea was ignored.
CBI officials believe the rapid cremation prevented the possibility of conducting a second post-mortem, which could have been crucial to the investigation. “Had the body not been cremated in such a hurry, a second post-mortem could have been possible,” CBI sources said, emphasizing the potential significance of this procedure in the case.
