As the nation observed Muharram, a day of mourning and remembrance for the sacrifices made in the Battle of Karbala, senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge took the occasion to underline the importance of standing against injustice and upholding the values of truth and sacrifice.
Rahul Gandhi, in a social media post, said, “On this solemn day of Muharram, we remember the courage and sacrifice of Imam Hussain and his companions. Their stand against tyranny remains a timeless lesson in fighting injustice. Let us uphold the values of truth, compassion, and unity.”
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Muharram reminds us of the ultimate sacrifice made in the fight against oppression. Let us honour the spirit of Karbala by pledging to protect justice, peace, and equality in our society.”
Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, holds deep spiritual and historical significance for the Muslim community. The 10th day, known as Ashura, marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, and his followers in the year 680 CE.
Leaders across the political spectrum extended their respects and called for reflection on the values of courage, sacrifice, and social justice that Muharram signifies.
The Congress party’s message comes at a time when political narratives around social equity and justice continue to shape national discourse. Their statements are seen as efforts to align with the values of secularism and unity, drawing inspiration from historical legacies that transcend religious boundaries.
