New Delhi, November 28 (UITV)- Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took oath as a Lok Sabha member for the first time on Thursday. Priyanka Gandhi, who was elected MP from Wayanad seat of Kerala, took oath in Hindi language with a copy of the Indian Constitution in her hand in the Parliament House. Her entire family was present on this historic occasion. Many Congress leaders and MPs including mother Sonia Gandhi, brother Rahul Gandhi, husband Robert Vadra, son Rehan Vadra and daughter Miraya Vadra attended the event.
During her oath taking, Priyanka Gandhi said, “I, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who has been elected a member of the Lok Sabha, swear with sincerity that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India as established by law. I will keep the sovereignty and integrity of India intact and will faithfully discharge the duties of the office I am about to assume. Jai Hind.”
Priyanka Gandhi was seen wearing a cream colored saree and she took oath as soon as the proceedings started in the Lok Sabha at 11 am. During this, she was holding a copy of the Indian Constitution in her hand, which she was enthusiastically showing in the air.
In the Wayanad by-election, Priyanka Gandhi defeated Satyan Mokeri of the Communist Party of India (CPI) by a huge margin. Priyanka got 6,22,338 votes, while Mokeri got only 2,11,407 votes. BJP candidate Navya Haridas came third, who got 1,09,939 votes. Priyanka registered this victory by a huge margin of 4,10,931 votes, which is considered a major achievement in her political career.
With this swearing-in, three members of the Gandhi-Nehru family appeared together for the first time in the Indian Parliament. Rahul Gandhi is the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, while Sonia Gandhi is a member of the Rajya Sabha. This is Priyanka Gandhi’s first parliamentary innings.
Sonia Gandhi, Robert Vadra, their two children, Mallikarjun Kharge, Ranjit Ranjan and other Congress MPs were present in the gallery to watch Priyanka’s swearing-in ceremony in Parliament House. As soon as Priyanka entered the Lok Sabha, Congress MPs surrounded her and started taking photos and selfies.
After the swearing-in, Priyanka Gandhi greeted opposition MPs and leaders of the ruling party. She also met Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. After this, Priyanka greeted her mother Sonia Gandhi and mother-in-law sitting in the gallery.
However, soon after the swearing-in, the proceedings of Parliament fell prey to uproar. Opposition MPs started sloganeering, forcing Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to adjourn the proceedings till 12 noon.
Priyanka Gandhi entered active politics during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, but did not contest the election at that time. She was handling the responsibility of the eastern region of Uttar Pradesh as the general secretary of the Congress party. This time Priyanka, who contested for the first time in the Wayanad by-election, registered a historic victory.
The Wayanad Lok Sabha seat holds special significance for the Congress party. In 2019, Rahul Gandhi had won this seat by a margin of 3.65 lakh votes. However, Rahul Gandhi decided to represent the Rae Bareli seat in the Lok Sabha despite losing the Amethi seat in Uttar Pradesh. After this, the Wayanad seat fell vacant, where the by-election was held on November 13 and Priyanka Gandhi maintained the strong base of the Congress.
Priyanka Gandhi’s family played a special role in her swearing-in ceremony. Husband Robert Vadra, son Rehan and daughter Miraya as well as Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi boosted Priyanka’s morale by being a part of this historic moment.
