Srinagar, December 6: According to the Meteorological Department, Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir recorded the coldest night so far this season on Wednesday, where the minimum temperature was recorded at minus 2 degrees Celsius. Other places in the region also experienced cold, with Gulmarg recording a minimum temperature of minus 2.2 degrees Celsius and Pahalgam minus 5.1 degrees Celsius.
Temperatures remained relatively low in Jathe mmu region, with minimum temperatures recorded at 9 degrees Celsius in Jammu, 8.4 degrees Celsius in Katra, 3.6 degrees Celsius in Batote, 1.4 degrees Celsius in Bhaderwah and 0.8 degrees Celsius in Banihal.
As temperatures drop, people in Kashmir are relying on traditional winter clothing like ‘Pheran’ (a tweed over-garment) and ‘Kangri’ (an earthen fire pot woven into willow wicker) to stay warm. The region is entering a 40-day long period known as ‘Chillai Kalan’ of harsh winter, starting on 21 December and ending on 30 January every year.
