On May 27, 2025, a tragic incident occurred in Panchkula, Haryana, where seven members of the Mittal family from Dehradun were found dead in a car parked in Sector 27. Authorities suspect this was a mass suicide driven by severe financial distress.
What Happened?
The deceased included Praveen Mittal (42), his wife Reena, their three children—Hardik (14) and twin daughters Dhruvika and Dalisha (11)—and Praveen’s parents, Deshraj and Vimla. The family had attended a religious event by Bageshwar Dham’s Baba Dhirendra Shastri earlier that day. Instead of returning home, they parked their Hyundai Aura car in Sector 27, where they allegedly consumed poison. A passerby noticed the car with a towel hanging from one of its doors and found the occupants unresponsive, prompting a call to the police.
The Suicide Note
A two-page note recovered from the vehicle indicated that the family was overwhelmed by debt, with liabilities amounting to ₹15–20 crore. Praveen Mittal, who ran a taxi service, reportedly faced threats from lenders. In the note, he expressed remorse, stating, “I have gone bankrupt. I am responsible for all this,” and requested that his father-in-law not be harassed.
Community Reaction
The incident has left the local community in shock. Residents expressed feelings of helplessness, with some stating, “No one helped us,” highlighting a perceived lack of support or intervention that might have prevented the tragedy.
