The widow of Captain Anshuman Singh, Smriti Singh, has been subjected to online trolling following her receipt of the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award, awarded posthumously to her husband. Captain Singh lost his life in July 2023 while attempting to rescue fellow soldiers during a fire at an army camp in Siachen. On July 5, 2024, Smriti Singh and her mother-in-law, Manju Singh, accepted the award from President Droupadi Murmu.
Subsequently, Smriti Singh faced derogatory comments on social media. The National Commission for Women (NCW) took suo motu cognizance of the matter and filed a complaint with the Delhi Police. An FIR was registered by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operation (IFSO) unit under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. The NCW also demanded a detailed report on the action taken within three days.
In a related incident, Kerala-based fashion influencer Reshma Sebastian was mistakenly identified as Smriti Singh and faced online abuse. Sebastian clarified the misunderstanding on her social media and warned of legal action against those spreading false information.
The situation has garnered widespread attention, highlighting issues of online harassment and the need for respectful discourse, especially concerning individuals who have endured personal tragedies.
