Britain’s Indian diaspora champion Priti Patel thanks all for voting to leave EU

Britain’s senior-most Indian-origin minister Priti Patel

London, June 27 (UITV)- Britain’s senior-most Indian-origin minister Priti Patel, who had campaigned vehemently in favor of Brexit thanked all for voting to leave EU on Friday. Patel believes today’s historic referendum result in favor of Britain’s leaving the European Union (EU) will ultimately be good for India-UK ties.

Patel, who is Minister of State for Employment in British Prime Minister David Cameron’s cabinet and also serves as Cameron’s Indian Diaspora Champion, has been one of the leading voice of the “Vote Leave” camp which favored Brexit.

In a tweet, she had said: “#IVotedLeave so we can once again be a self- governing country free to make our own laws and our own ways in the world.”

After the Brexit result, she again tweeted: “And thank you to everyone across the Maldon District & Colchester Borough too. #EURefResults.”

The Gujarati-origin Conservative party minister has also repeatedly made personal references to her own Indian roots on the Vote Leave campaign trail.

One of the most contentious issues in the EU debate in the lead up to the in-out referendum has been immigration. England and Wales voted strongly to exit while London, Scotland and Northern Ireland backed the “Remain” vote.

The 52-48 per cent result in favor of Brexit indicates that the crucial estimate of 16.8 per cent of undecided votes among the 1.2 million Indian-origin electorate of the UK seem to have been won over by at least some of their arguments. Priti Patel is now expected to play an active role on the front-benches of British politics.

UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage, who had been campaigning for 20 long years to dump the EU, called the Friday result UK’s “Independence Day”.
