Poland PM Mateusz Morawiecki cancels Israel trip after Netanyahu's Holocaust comment
Warsaw, Feb 18 (UITV/IANS) - Poland Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has cancelled a trip to Israel following comments on the Holocaust by Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu.
Netanyahu was quoted in Israeli media as saying "Poles co-operated with the Germans" during the Holocaust.
He later issued a clarification saying he was not referring to the Polish nation or all Polish people, the BBC reported.
Poland summoned the Israeli ambassador, and on Sunday, said Morawiecki would not attend a summit on Tuesday.

Pakistani who plotted suicide bombing killed: Police
Srinagar, Feb 18 (UITV/IANS)- Security forces on Monday shot dead a Pakistani militant of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) who masterminded the suicide bombing of a CRPF convoy in Jammu and Kashmir killing 49 troopers, police sources said.
Kamran, a JeM commander, was killed in a gunfight barely 10 km from the spot in Pulwama district where the suicide bombing took place on February 14.
The second slain militant has been identified as Bilal Ahmed Naik alias Rashid Bhai, a Kashmiri militant, the sources said.
A Major and three soldiers, besides a civilian, were also killed in the gunfight, police said.

Shinzo Abe avoids commenting on Trump' candidature for Nobel Prize
Tokyo, Feb 18 (UITV/IANS) - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday declined to comment on US President Donald Trumps claims that he has nominated the American leader for this years Nobel Peace Prize, but instead praised Trumps efforts to defuse the North Korean nuclear crisis.
"I'm not saying (the claim) is untrue," The Japan Times quoted Abe as saying to a Budget Committee session of the Lower House of Parliament.
"The Nobel committee won't reveal who nominated (someone for a prize) or those who were nominated for fifty years. In accordance with this policy, I'd like to refrain from commenting," he added.

Indian appointed to high-level accounting post at UN
United Nations, Feb 15 (UITV/IANS) - Chandramouli Ramanathan has been appointed as the world body's controller by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, according to his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.
Dujarric told reporters: "Chandramouli brings to the position nearly 40 years of executive international experience in diverse organizational settings in finance and budget, management and information technology. We are delighted to officially have him in that position."
Ramanathan will simultaneously be the Assistant Secretary-General for Programme Planning, Budget and Finance in the Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance.
While serving as the Assistant Secretary-General for Enterprise Resource Planning, he was concurrently made the acting controller in September when Bettina Tucci Bartsiotas of Uruguay left the position.
Earlier he had served the UN as Deputy Controller, Director of Accounts Division, and Chief of Service in IT Services Division.

Anupam on Sunday treated his fans and followers to a Q&A session on Twitter, where a user asked him about the most rewarding part of playing Doctor Kapoor in the show.

New technique to measure blood clot developed
London, Feb 17 (UITV/IANS) - Scientists have developed a new technique that allows them to measure blood clotting as well as the formation of free radicals, that leads to the build-up of blood clots, which in turn cause heart disease, stroke and dementia.
The technique, led by the University of Exeter researchers, investigates a part of the blood clotting process which focuses on the ways in which platelets from blood samples clump together.
"This method may be useful for future studies looking into new anti-platelet treatments for diseases such as diabetes, where clotting is disturbed and increases the risk of heart attack or stroke,"...

Beijing, Feb 17 (UITV/IANS) - A team of Chinese scientists have developed a large-scale transparent smart window that can change light intensity while effectively capturing the particulate matter in smog, a study said.
The study published on Saturday in the journal iScience described a simple solution-based process to fabricate large-area flexible transparent windows with Ag-nylon electrodes for high-efficiency PM2.5 capture, reports Xinhua news agency.
