New York reports lowest COVID-19 deaths since pandemic began

New York, June 6 (UITV/IANS)- With 42 COVID-19 deaths in 24 hours, New York recorded the lowest number of daily deaths since the pandemic hit the state, the epicentre of the disease outbreak in the US, said Governor Andrew Cuomo.

"While our hearts ache for those families who lost loved ones yesterday, just eight weeks ago, we had 800 deaths per day," Xinhua news agency quoted Cuomo as saying at his daily briefing on Friday.

Meanwhile, the number of total hospitalizations was down on Thursday to 2,728 from a record-high of 18,825 during the peak of the pandemic.

Uddhav Thackeray takes a boat to cyclone-ravaged Raigad

Mumbai, June 5 (UITV/IANS)- Two days after Cyclone Nisarga claimed six lives and wreaked havoc in over a dozen districts, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday hopped onto a boat to visit Raigad - the worst-hit in Maharashtra.

He took a Ro-Ro boat for the hour-long ride from Bhaucha Dhakka in south Mumbai to Alibaug on the mainland, accompanied by Ministers Aditya Thackeray, Aslam Shaikh, Additional Chief Secretary A. K. Singh and other senior officials.

At Raigad, he was scheduled to visit some of the worst-hit villages along with Collector Nidhi Choudhari and Superintendent of Police Anil Paraskar and others.

Verdict on ex-Malay PM Najib Razak's 1st case set for July

Kuala Lumpur, June 5 (UITV/IANS)- The verdict on a case against former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak related to SRC International, a former unit of state investment fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), will be delivered on July 28, a court said on Friday.

The verdict will be the first of several corruption trials against Najib in the multi-million-dollar scandal, reports Xinhua news agency.

Kuala Lumpur High Court Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali ruled that he will deliver his verdict next month following the close of final submissions.

NEW DELHI, May 28 (UITV): The Indian diaspora in several countries has entered to help the thousands of Indians who were stranded ensuing the lockdown, Sanjay Bhattacharyya, secretary, overseas Indianaffairs and consular passports visas, ministry of external affairs, said addressing several people of Indian origin around the world, on Wednesday.
“People of Indian origin overseas are an energetic and powerful community and it is appreciated that they came forward to help their Indian brothers and sisters with food, shelter, counselling and in several other ways,” he said at a webinar dialogue on economic engagement between India and its diaspora arranged by the PIO Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Los Angeles, June 5 (UITV/IANS)- Hollywood star Angelina Jolie feels discrimination and impunity cannot be justified in any way, and says she hopes people in the US can come together to "address the deep structural wrongs in our society".

The Oscar-winning star, who turned 45 on Thursday, also donated $200,000 to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, reports people.com.

In a precautionary move to stem community transmission, the Education Mnistry said it plans to limit the number of students at schools in the capital area, reports Yonhap News Agency.

"Successful deployment of 60 Starlink satellites confirmed," SpaceX tweeted late on Wednesday.

The launch came less than a week after the rocket builder sent two NASA astronauts to the International Space Station on a Falcon 9 rocket over the weekend.
