Indian handicraft exhibition is a platform for Sri Lankan artisans

Shilpa Kala – 2017, an Indian handicraft exhibition in Sri Lanka

Colombo, May 26 (UITV): An Indian Handicraft Exhibition named Shilpa Kala -2017 has been opened in Colombo on 25th May. The exhibition is a big platform for Indian and Sri Lankan artisans. Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Speaker of Sri Lankan parliament Karu Jayasuriya were present in the opening ceremony of the exhibition.


“Government of India has taken many steps to promote Indian handicrafts abroad. But, this is a unique event, where we are focusing not only on Indian handicrafts but also providing a platform for Sri Lankan artisans,” Sandhu told during the opening ceremony.


The exhibition is showcasing best traditional handicrafts from India and Sri Lanka. All the items are confluence of culture in handicrafts.

This Shilpa Kala exhibition is a partnership between Dastakaari Haat Samiti from New Delhi and Hands of Sri Lanka foundation of Colombo.


Sandhu added “Partnership would help Sri Lankan market, her products to a large audience. India is a huge market for Sri Lankan handicraft products! Regular Sri Lankan participation in Surajkund Mela (Crafts Festival) in India and the amount of popularity they received is a known example”


Some handicraft items in the exhibotion


Shilpa Kala-2017, an exhibition cum sale of traditional handicrafts will be continued till 28th of May.  According to the source, this is a nice initiative to increase the percentage of Indian tourists in Sri Lanka.
