First indenture - The British wanted Indians to work in Natal as workers. But the Indians refused, and as a result, the British introduced the indenture system. On 18 January 1826, the Government of the French Indian Ocean island of Réunion laid down terms for the introduction of Indian labourers to the colony. Each man was required to appear before a magistrate and declare that he was going voluntarily. The contract was for five years with pay of (12¢ US) per month and rations provided labourers had been transported from Pondicherry and Karaikal.

Don't know why studios are avoiding interesting films: Actor Ben Stiller

Cannes, May 23 (UiTV/IANS)- Actor Ben Stiller says nowadays film studios are not headed by people who appreciate creativity, and feels making money has become a bigger focus.

"I don't know why the studios have become so adverse to making interesting films and taking chances. I guess it's about money," variety.com quoted Stiller as saying.

He added: "These studios are owned by big conglomerates and they're not independent studios making films. They have a huge profit margin, so they make movies that can make a lot of money. Unfortunately, that means the really good interesting movies aren't getting made."

Stiller is essaying the...

Earth Used To Be A Synestia, A Donut-Shaped New Type Of Planetary

New York, May 23 (UiTV/IANS)- Early in its history, our home planet was likely a huge, spinning, donut-shaped mass of hot, vaporised rock, now called a "synestia", according to a new study.

In a paper published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets, the researchers proposed that a synestia formed as planet-sized objects smashed into each other.

For the study, planetary scientists Simon Lock at Harvard University and Sarah Stewart at the University of California - Davis explored how planets can form from a series of giant impacts.

Current theories of planet formation hold that rocky planets such as the Earth, Mars and...

Orbital details of TRAPPIST-1's outermost planet confirmed

Washington, May 23 (UiTV/IANS)- Using NASA's Kepler space telescope, scientists have confirmed that the outermost and least understood planet in the TRAPPIST-1 system orbits its star every 19 days.

Scientists announced that the TRAPPIST-1 system has seven Earth-sized planets at a NASA press conference on February 22.

NASA's Spitzer space telescope, the TRAPPIST (Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope) in Chile and other ground-based telescopes were used to detect and characterise the planets.

But the collaboration only had an estimate for the period of the outermost planet --TRAPPIST-1h.
