Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin talk on phone, discuss North Korea: White House

Washington, Dec 15 (UITV/IANS) - US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation, talking about how to resolve the situation in North Korea, the White House has said.

Russia said Trump initiated the phone call to thank Putin for his favourable assessment of his work, USA Today reported.

The two sides sent out only bare-bones summaries of the afternoon phone call, but the White House version of the call noted that Trump "thanked Putin for acknowledging America's strong economic performance" earlier in the day.

Paid news has become menace, says Vice President Venkaiah Naidu

New Delhi, Dec 15 (UITV/IANS) - Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday said "paid news" had become "menace" and media outlets should ensure "sensibility" in their news than focusing on "sensationalism".

"Paid news is not news. It has become a menace. It weakens the society. You (news outlets) have power to influence people, use it wisely," Naidu said after launching the Delhi edition of Marathi daily Lokmat here.

He also said that news should not be mixed with views.

Nay Pyi Taw, Dec 14 (UITV/IANS) - Myanmar on Thursday charged two journalists with violating the British colonial era Official Secrets Act and illegally obtaining confidential documents from the police related to a controversial military offensive in Rakhine.

Wa Lone, 31 and Kyaw Soe Oo, 27, who work for the Reuters news agency, were arrested on Tuesday in Yangon and face a possible 14-year jail sentence, reports Efe news.

Govinda and Sridevi stole the limelight at the Masala! Awards 2017

Dubai, Dec 14 (UITV/IANS): Bollywood veterans Govinda and Sridevi stole the limelight at the Masala! Awards 2017 here, where Pakistani actresses Mahira Khan and Saba Qamar too were present.

Govinda was given the Dancing Legend of Bollywood honour, and he justified the title with a lively performance at the event here on Wednesday night.

Actor Arjun Rampal bagged an award for Contribution to Cinema at the extravaganza, held at the Bollywood Parks, Dubai Parks and Resort. There were also celebrities like Manish Malhotra, Celina Jaitley and Ankita Lokhande, according to the official website of the Masala! Awards.

Sridevi donned an exquisite sequinned creation by Malhotra, and she looked evergreen as she picked up the Best Actress Award.

Mahira made a style statement in a wine coloured strapless gown with a diamond necklace, and had her hair pulled back with minimal make-up. She walked away with the Asian Woman of substance Award.

At the red carpet, Mahira spoke about being a fan of Sridevi, and said that just a few days ago, she was with her friends and they were dancing to the Indian actress' hit song "Hawaa hawaai".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is saddened by the death of Neeraj Vora

New Delhi, Dec 14 (UITV/IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said he was saddened by the death of Bollywood actor Neeraj Vora.

"Saddened by the demise of Neeraj Vora. An energetic and creative personality, he will be remembered for his films and warm nature. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this sad hour," Modi tweeted.

Vora, also a writer and director known for his humorous streak on and off screen, died in Mumbai early on Thursday, months after being comatose, a family member said.

London, Dec 14 (UITV/IANS): A single treatment with a gene therapy drug has shown promise in curing patients with haemophilia -- a disorder in which blood does not clot normally, results of a clinical trial in Britain show.

Over one year on from a single treatment with a gene therapy drug, participants with haemophilia A (the most common type) are showing normal levels of the previously missing protein, and effectively curing them, showed the study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Sydney, Dec 14 (UITV/IANS): A giant species of penguins, which had the size of an adult human, inhabited New Zealand between 55 and 60 million years ago, scientific researchers revealed on Wednesday.

A group of researchers from Germany and New Zealand revealed in a study published in the scientific journal Nature Communications that this ancient species measured about 1.65 meters on foot, or about 1.77 meters from its tail to the top of its head, and weighed about 100 kg.
