Navtej Sarna could be India’s next Ambassador to US

India’s High Commissioner to UK Navtej Srana

New Delhi, Aug 27 (UITV)- India’s High Commissioner to UK Navtej Srana is likely to be selected for the high-profile assignment of Ambassador to the US.

A 1980-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Sarna will take over from Arun Kumar Singh who retires August end.

It is understood that Mr Sarna was being considered for the post and he would be taking charge in the midst of the US Presidential campaign and his main task will be to ensure continuity in Indo-U.S. relations when he takes charge in Washington.

It is also learnt that Taranjit Sandhu, who is India’s chief of mission in Washington, is headed to Sri Lanka and India’s envoy to the island nation YK Sinha could take Sarna’s place in the UK.

He was Secretary, West in the Ministry of External Affairs before his present assignment in the UK. Mr Sarna was the longest serving MEA spokesperson, heading the External Publicity Division from 2002 to 2008.

In his career spanning 35 years, he has handled several important assignments at the MEA and in Indian diplomatic missions in South Asia, the Middle East, Europe and South America.

Sarna has also penned a number of fiction and non-fiction books and served as Indian ambassador to Israel from 2008 to 2012, apart from in various embassies in Europe. For Two years from August 2012, Sarna served as additional secretary in-charge of international organizations in the MEA.

Sarna’s main task would be to maintain the spirit of the increasingly close Indo-US relations when the new dispensation comes to office in Washington early next year.
