PM pays tribute to Indo-Fijian religious organization’s contribution to Fiji

Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama

Fiji, June 27 (UITV)- Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has paid tribute to the contribution made by the largest Indo-Fijian religious organization ‘Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha’ of Fiji over the years.

“I want every Fijian to know the wonderful story of the Sanatan Sabha – the largest Indo-Fijian religious organization in Fiji – and the immense contribution its members have made to our nation over the years,” he said in opening the Sabha’s 57th convention in Sigatoka.

Over the years Sanatan Sabha has established: more than 120 learning institutions, over 70 public temples, about 700 Ramayan Mandalis, 13 Nari Sabha branches and Sanatan Brahman Sabha members with National youth wing.

Bainimarama also mentioned how Indians suffered cruel discrimination on the basis of ethnicity and religion in the 1920s and how they were denied to say in national affairs. “Now we have common identity, everyone is a Fijian, religious freedom is guaranteed and we finally have an electoral system in which everyone’s vote is worth the same,” he said.

Prime Minister especially singled out the contribution that organization has made to education in Fiji and its commitment to making Fiji a knowledge-based society with its almost 120 learning institutions in Fiji.

“The graduates of these institutions have fanned out into Fijian society at every level-government, the private sector and civil society,” he said.
