The leader of the Militant Socialist Movement (MSM), Pravind Jugnauth, has been nominated to serve as the island nation’s next finance minister by President of the Republic, Ameenah Gurib-Fakim.

The decision of his nomination was made hours after the judgement of the Supreme Court Pertaining to the MedPoint affair was revealed. The lower court had found him guilty, while previously serving as finance minister, of being part of the decision to reallocate health ministry funds to acquire a private hospital, MedPoint, in which his sister had shares, and now he has been exonerated, winning the trial.

Mauritian Prime Minister Anerood Jugnauth, said that he was always confident that there was no really any case against his son. He believes that Pravind has a great future in politics, and that the recent developments will give him the new beginning.

Pravind Juganuth has occupied various positions in both government and opposition since 2000. He was Minister of Agriculture from 2000 to 2003, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance from 2003 to 2005.

Pravind was previously serving as Minister of Technology, Communication and Innovation in Anerood Jugnauth’s government following the victory of their alliance LEPEP in the 2014 general elections.

The appointment of Pravind Jugnauth, had been widely expected once his conviction had been quashed. According to his father, justice has won.

Also, now as a new Minister of Finance has been nominated, the government’s major challenge will be to draft a budget for presentation to parliament next month in line with government commitments to stimulate growth, attract investments and create jobs.
