Recently released from prison to serve the rest of his two-year sentence at home, Rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine now has a whole new problem on his hands. The 23-year-old, whose real name is Daniel Hernandez, is being sued for $2.2 million by a California-based clothing brand, Fashion Nova. The suit alleges a breach of contract, where the rapper was paid “a $225,000 advance to promote the brand on Instagram, which the company says he didn’t end up doing.”
The claim, which also names other defendants including Florida-based MTA Booking, states that the company entered into an agreement with the defendants to “work in unison to bolster” their reputations through social media. It is alleged that Hernandez and the other defendants “had premeditated discussions to conspire against Fashion Nova, by inducing Fashion Nova to enter into a prepaid agreement advancing significant funds to MTA Defendants in the amount of $225,000.”
Fashion Nova alleges that Hernandez never intended to go through with his part of the agreement, and distributed advances to the other defendants before he was sentenced on December 18 last year. “The sly deceit and sharp tactics were principally led by MTA defendants, however, each defendant played an equally deceitful role in the conspiracy to defraud Fashion Nova,” the company stated.
“The Financial detriment is irreparable and has already cost Fashion Nova millions of dollars,” stated the claim. “Accordingly, Fashion Nova brings this suit to immediately rescind the Service Agreement, to get back its advanced payment, and or compensatory damages and other available legal remedies allowed by law, including attorneys fees and punitive damages.”
Hernandez, who faced a 37-year sentence on multiple charges, including racketeering, has recently been released from prison due to health concerns associated with COVID-19. The move to let the rapper serve out the rest of his sentence at home came after his lawyer’s claim that Hernandez’s asthma condition made him particularly vulnerable in prison during the coronavirus outbreak.
Bertha Mijangos from THEGOODESTATE.com commented that it is little surprise that Fashion Nova believed that going into an arrangement with Hernandez would be mutually beneficial. “Hip-hop culture is very influential among youth, from the way they dress to their behavior. Hernandez’s look is quite distinct, and not just because of the facial tattoos. His flare for fashion was even visible in the courtroom. During one of his recent court appearances, he wore a wrinkled and oversized shirt, knotted pink ties, as well as the obligatory Air Jordan sneakers.”
