Two Indian-American authors among hundreds of writers sign anti-Trump open letter

Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump

New York, May 26 (UITV)- A group of more than 450 writers, including heavy hitters such as Stephen King, Cheryl Strayed and Dave Eggers have come out against the presumptive Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump in an open letter and online petition issued Tuesday.

Two Indian-American authors are also among hundreds of writers who have voiced their opposition for Trump, slamming him for “encouraging aggression” among his followers and denigrating women and minorities.

Indian-origin Mira Jacob New York and India-born Samina Ali from California joined hundreds of writers from across the US in adding their names to an online public petition against Donald Trump. The letter was published on literary news site Lithub, and is addressed to “the American people.”

Mira Jacob, who currently teaches fiction at New York University, is the author of the critically acclaimed novel ‘The Sleepwalker’s Guide to Dancing’ which was shortlisted for India’s Tata First Literature Award. Samina Ali is also an award-winning author, activist and cultural commentator.

The Two have voiced their opposition for Trump, saying that mere wealth and celebrity status does not qualify “anyone to speak for the United States”.

The letter concludes: “We, the undersigned, as a matter of conscience, oppose, unequivocally the candidacy of Donald J. Trump for the Presidency of the United States.”
