UT-Austin Professor Raj Patel to receive sixth annual James Beard Foundation Leadership Awards

New York, Oct 5 (UITV)- The James Beard Foundation today announced the recipients of the sixth annual James Beard Foundation Leaderships Awards. Raj Patel, an Indian-American professor at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas will be one of the six recipients of the award.

The awards recognize specific outstanding initiatives as well as bodies of work and lifetime achievement. Criteria used to select this year’s honorees include excellence of work, innovation in approach and scale of impact either within a community or across the nation.

Raj Patel, an author, activist and academic, is being recognized for his scholarship and advocacy work to change the inequalities in our world’s food system. Patel is a New York Times bestselling author, a distinguish documentarian, the author of many investigating pieces about the injustice of the food system, and a professor.

“This year’s honorees are game-changers who have made an impact in improving childhood nutrition, fighting hunger and promoting justice and equality in our food system. We are delighted to recognize these six visionaries as we celebrate our Foundation’s sixth annual Leadership Awards ceremony.” said Susan Ungaro, President of the James Beard Foundation.

The 2016 honorees will be recognized at the annual awards dinner on Oct. 17 and 18 at Hearst Tower as part of the JBF Food Conference in New York City.

The other honorees include, Greg Lucas, Lucas Benitz, John Body, Jr., Anna Lappe and Jim McGovem. Honorees were selected by previous winners.
