May makes last-ditch plea urging MPs to back Brexit deal

London, Jan 15 (UITV/IANS)- UK Prime Minister Theresa May on Monday made a last-ditch attempt urging MPs to support her Brexit plan ahead of Tuesday's crucial vote on her beleaguered withdrawal deal with the European Union.

In a speech to workers at a factory in Stoke-on-Trent, a part of the UK that voted heavily in favour of leaving the EU, May said that Parliament was more likely to prevent Brexit than allowing it to leave without a deal.

Indian American White House official leaves Trump administration

Washington, Jan 15 (UITV/IANS)- Raj Shah, an Indian American spokesman in the White House Press Office, has left President Donald Trump's administration and joined an arm of a Florida-based lobbying firm, officials said.

Shah, a former researcher at the Republican National Committee, will lead the Media Group, the press wing of Ballard Partners, a lobbying firm with offices in Florida and Washington, The New York Times quoted the officials as saying on Monday.

He will work with Jamie Rubin, a Democrat who was a spokesman for Madeleine Albright, the former Secretary of State.

Shah served in the Trump White House beginning in January 2017 as Deputy Assistant to the President, Deputy Communications Director and Deputy Press Secretary.

His portfolio recently included helping prepare Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh for his Senate confirmation hearings to the Supreme Court.

His departure comes as the White House press and communications teams have been depleted.

Several aides have moved on to roles at government agencies or have left the administration entirely.

Court to consider chargesheet in JNU sedition case on Jan 19

New Delhi, Jan 15 (UITV/IANS)- A court here on Tuesday set January 19 for considering a chargesheet filed against former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student leaders Kanhaiya Kumar and nine others in a sedition case after some students shouted "anti-national slogans" in February 2016.

New assistive robot to help elderly live independently

New York, Jan 15 (UITV/IANS)- Scientists have created a robot that could help elderly people with dementia and other limitations live independently in their own homes.

The Robot Activity Support System, or RAS, developed by the Washington State University (WSU), uses sensors embedded in a smart home to determine where its residents are, what they are doing and when they need assistance with daily activities.

It navigates through rooms and around obstacles to find people on its own, provides video instructions on how to do simple tasks and can even lead its owner to objects like their medication or a snack in the kitchen.
