A delegation of 655 athletes from India is currently participating in the 19th edition of the Asian Games 2023, held in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China. The event officially commenced on September 23 and is set to conclude on October 8. Originally scheduled for 2022, the games were postponed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the previous edition of the Asian Games in Jakarta in 2018, India achieved its best-ever performance, with a total of 70 medals – 16 gold, 23 silver, and 31 bronze. In Hangzhou, India is striving to surpass this achievement.

Over the years, athletics has been the primary contributor to India’s medal tally at the Asian Games, accounting for 254 medals out of a total of 672. In Hangzhou 2023, track and field events will once again be a focal point for India, with a contingent of 68 athletes, the largest in any sport.

The Indian athletics squad in Hangzhou boasts notable names such as Neeraj Chopra, the reigning world, Olympic, and Asian Games champion in javelin throw, Avinash Sable, who won silver in the Commonwealth Games men’s 3000m steeplechase, and Jyothi Yarraji, a sensation in women’s hurdles.

India is also making its debut in cricket at the Asian Games, fielding both men’s and women’s teams. Full representation is being provided for football and hockey as well.

In boxing, India has strong medal contenders in Nikhat Zareen, a world champion, and Lovlina Borgohain, an Olympic medalist. The wrestling team features Bajrang Punia, another Olympic medalist, and Antim Panghal.

The shooting squad, led by athletes like Manu Bhaker and Rudrankksh Patil, is expected to make a significant impact. Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and badminton star PV Sindhu, both Olympic medal winners, are also competing in Hangzhou, alongside archery world champions Aditi Gopichand Swami and Ojas Pravin Deotale.

In addition to the pursuit of medals, the Asian Games in Hangzhou also provide opportunities for athletes to secure 74 quota spots for the Paris 2024 Olympics. These spots are distributed across various sports, including archery, artistic swimming, boxing, breaking, hockey, modern pentathlon, sailing, tennis, and water polo.

As of Thursday, October 5, India has won a total of 85 medals at the Asian Games 2023, comprising 21 gold, 32 silver, and 32 bronze. China leads the overall medals tally at the Asian Games 2023 with 171 gold medals, followed by Japan with 37 gold medals and the Republic of Korea with 33 gold medals.
