The Calcutta High Court, in a decision dated July 1, 2025, has instructed cricketer Mohammed Shami to pay a total of ₹4 lakh per month as interim maintenance to his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, and their daughter Aaira. The breakdown includes ₹1.5 lakh for Jahan and ₹2.5 lakh for their daughter, as deemed “just, fair and reasonable” by Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee.
This marks a significant increase from the 2023 district court order, where Shami was ordered to pay only ₹50,000 to his wife and ₹80,000 to the child. Jahan had originally sought ₹7 lakh for herself and ₹3 lakh for their daughter, citing Shami’s reported monthly income of around ₹60 lakh during FY 2021–22.
The High Court emphasized that since Jahan remains unmarried and is responsible for raising their daughter, she is entitled to maintain a lifestyle comparable to what she had during the marriage. The court also noted that Shami is free to make additional voluntary contributions for his daughter’s education and other future needs.
The legal battle traces back to March 2018, when Jahan filed allegations of domestic violence, dowry harassment, and accusations of match-fixing. These events led to an FIR, an arrest warrant in 2019, and BCCI-led investigations that temporarily suspended and later reinstated Shami’s national contract.
In summary, Shami faces a steeply increased monthly payment obligation of ₹4 lakh under a legal order that reflects both his financial capacity and the court’s effort to protect his wife and child.
