Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has praised the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision to hand over the ODI captaincy to Shubman Gill, calling it a forward-looking move. Speaking on the leadership change, Harbhajan said Gill had already “passed the test” when he led India during their Test tour of England earlier this year. According to him, Gill showed maturity, tactical awareness, and the ability to handle pressure, which convinced the selectors that he was ready to take charge of the national side in white-ball cricket.

Gill was recently announced as India’s new ODI captain ahead of the three-match series against Australia, replacing Rohit Sharma. Harbhajan acknowledged that while the decision made sense from a long-term perspective—especially with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind—it was still surprising to see Rohit removed from the role. He noted that Rohit’s tenure as captain was marked by stability and success, and his contributions to Indian cricket remain invaluable.

The former cricketer also emphasized that leadership changes are never easy, but India had to prepare for the future. “Shubman Gill’s biggest challenge came in England, and he handled it superbly. That performance showed he could be trusted with bigger responsibilities,” Harbhajan said. He added that Gill now has a unique opportunity to grow into the role and shape the ODI team over the next two years.

At the same time, Harbhajan urged patience as Gill transitions into full-time captaincy. He said the young batter will need time to establish his leadership style, and the team must support him through the process. He also pointed out that Rohit Sharma’s experience and presence in the dressing room will continue to guide the side, even if he is no longer leading them on the field.

Concluding his remarks, Harbhajan congratulated Gill and expressed confidence that India’s future in ODIs is in capable hands. He also extended his best wishes to Rohit, reiterating that his legacy as a leader and player remains secure despite the recent change.
