Simon Harris is poised to assume the role of Ireland’s new Prime Minister, or Taoiseach, following his confirmation as the new leader of the ruling Fine Gael party.
His ascension comes in the wake of Leo Varadkar’s unexpected resignation as party leader and Taoiseach, citing both personal and political reasons.
In his inaugural address as party leader, Harris expressed profound gratitude, stating, “It’s the absolute honor of my life to accept the leadership of this esteemed party,” as reported by Sky News.
Having served as the minister for further and higher education, Harris emerged as the sole contender for the party leadership, with other potential candidates opting out, as per Xinhua news agency.
Acknowledging the trust vested in him by those who supported his leadership bid, Harris pledged to reciprocate their faith with relentless hard work. “With blood, sweat, and tears—day in and day out—alongside a commitment to responsibility, humility, and civility,” he affirmed.
Addressing the inevitable challenges ahead, Harris emphasized the enduring importance of core national values such as hope, enterprise, equality of opportunity, integrity, and security. He also rallied the party against the specter of populism and deliberate polarization, advocating for debates characterized by civility, honesty, and a resolute rejection of personal demonization.
Aged 37, Harris is poised to become Ireland’s youngest Prime Minister when the Irish parliament, the Dáil, reconvenes after the Easter break in April. He will lead the coalition government in Dublin, comprising Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, and the Green Party.
