Elon Musk has launched a vigorous campaign against former President Donald Trump’s proposed $4 trillion tax and spending legislation, officially titled the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” Musk, who recently stepped down from his role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has taken to social media to express his strong opposition, labeling the bill a “disgusting abomination” and warning that it would plunge the United States into “debt slavery.”
In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Musk urged Americans to contact their senators and representatives to oppose the bill, stating, “Bankrupting America is NOT ok! KILL the BILL.” He criticized the legislation for containing “the largest increase in the debt ceiling in US history,” estimating it would raise the ceiling by $5 trillion.
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projects that the bill would add $2.4 trillion to the national debt over the next decade. Key provisions include extending the 2017 tax cuts, increasing military and border security spending, and implementing significant cuts to Medicaid and food assistance programs. The CBO also estimates that the bill would result in approximately 10.9 million more uninsured Americans by 2034.
Musk’s opposition aligns him with several fiscal conservatives, including Rep. Thomas Massie, who described the bill as a “debt bomb ticking.” Musk concurred, retweeting Massie’s statement with the comment, “Absolutely.”
Despite the criticism, the White House remains steadfast in its support for the bill, arguing that it will stimulate economic growth. However, the legislation faces resistance from some Republicans concerned about its impact on the national debt and the elimination of green energy incentives.
Musk’s public denunciation of the bill marks a significant departure from his previous collaboration with the Trump administration and underscores the growing divide within the Republican Party over fiscal policy.
