Alexei Navalny, Russia’s most prominent opposition leader and staunch critic of President Vladimir Putin, has died in prison inside an Arctic prison colony. He was imprisoned in the prison of Yamalo-Nenets district for the last decade.
Alexei Navalny, Russia’s most prominent opposition leader and a staunch critic of President Vladimir Putin, was serving a 19-year prison sentence for crimes considered politically motivated.
According to the BBC report, Alexei Navalny was brought to the Arctic prison colony, considered one of the harshest prisons, late last year.
The prison service of the Yamalo-Nenets district informed about his death that on Friday, after a walk, he suddenly felt uneasy and fainted. After which the emergency medical team was immediately called. The emergency medical team tried their best to revive him, but they could not succeed in their efforts and Alexei Navalny died.
According to BBC report, prisoner Alexei Navalny was declared dead by emergency doctors. The reasons behind Alexei Navalny’s death are being investigated. Alexei Navalny’s lawyer Leonid Solovyov told Russian media that he would not make any comments right now.
