Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in New York early Tuesday, India time, to chair the UN Security Council meetings, as Moscow holds the UNSC Presidency this month. Lavrov is set to lead a session focused on “Multilateral cooperation in the interest of a more just, democratic, and sustainable world order.”

Before his arrival, Lavrov emphasized that discussions would include ensuring equal and indivisible security and addressing Western manipulation. He stated, “We will discuss multilateral cooperation and ensuring equal and indivisible security. Of course, we will also raise the issue of the West trying to manipulate everything and everyone.”

The UNSC meetings under Russia’s rotating monthly presidency include a session on the Middle East scheduled for July 17. This meeting aims to address ongoing conflicts and diplomatic efforts in the region.

Another significant meeting is set for July 19, focusing on the cooperation between the UN and regional and sub-regional organizations. This session will explore ways these bodies can work together to maintain international peace and security.

Russia’s UNSC presidency comes at a time of heightened global tensions and competing geopolitical interests, adding significance to the meetings Lavrov will chair. The discussions are expected to reflect Moscow’s stance on key international issues.

Lavrov’s leadership in these meetings underscores Russia’s role and influence within the UN Security Council. His remarks about Western manipulation signal a contentious atmosphere and potential clashes in viewpoints during the sessions.

The outcomes of these meetings could have far-reaching implications for international diplomacy and security, given the prominent topics on the agenda. Observers will closely watch how Russia navigates its presidency and the responses from other UNSC members.

The Security Council meetings this month will serve as a platform for major powers to articulate their positions on pressing global issues, with Lavrov at the helm steering the discussions.
