Ukraine is reeling from what has been described as the largest airstrike launched by Russia since the beginning of the full-scale war in 2022. In the early hours of June 29, 2025, Russia fired a staggering 537 aerial weapons, including 477 drones and decoys along with 60 missiles, in a coordinated attempt to overwhelm Ukraine’s air defenses. The Ukrainian military responded by intercepting 475 of these threats, using a combination of surface-to-air missiles, anti-aircraft fire, and electronic warfare systems. Despite this, several missiles and drones managed to strike civilian and energy infrastructure, causing fatalities and widespread damage across major cities such as Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, and Kherson.
Tragically, during the attack, Lieutenant Colonel Maksym Ustymenko, one of Ukraine’s highly trained F‑16 fighter pilots, was killed in action. Reports indicate that he successfully destroyed seven aerial targets before his aircraft sustained irreparable damage. In his final moments, he diverted the jet away from residential areas to avoid civilian casualties, ultimately sacrificing his own life. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posthumously awarded him the title Hero of Ukraine, the country’s highest honor, describing his actions as a symbol of exceptional courage and dedication.
The scale and precision of the Russian airstrike have renewed Ukraine’s appeals to its Western allies, particularly the United States, for enhanced air defense support. President Zelenskyy emphasized the need for more Patriot missile systems and faster deliveries of F‑16 jets, as the Ukrainian Air Force continues to operate under intense pressure. So far, Ukraine has reportedly lost three F‑16 jets, making the call for more advanced defense equipment even more urgent.
Beyond the military implications, the assault has had a devastating impact on civilians. At least 10 people have been confirmed dead, and over a dozen more injured, as missiles struck residential buildings, power grids, and civilian infrastructure. Emergency services were mobilized across the country to manage the aftermath, and many regions have experienced power outages and communication disruptions.
