Mexico City, Dec 23: Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has discussed economic and immigration issues with US President Joe Biden, especially in response to the surge of undocumented migrants at the Mexico-US border. During a call on Thursday, President López Obrador stressed the importance of establishing a development plan for Latin American and Caribbean countries to address the root causes of mass migration northward.
President López Obrador said Mexico is committed to regulating the current influx of migrants and strengthening efforts to manage the flow in an orderly manner. Recent weeks have seen a surge in the number of undocumented migrants, including individuals from Venezuela, Haiti, Cuba and Ecuador, concentrating at the Mexican–US border, particularly in Piedras Negras, a city in northern Mexico.
To deal with the situation, the Mexican government has urged the US to improve relations with countries such as Cuba and Venezuela with the aim of reducing migrant flows. Additionally, President López Obrador noted that his government is taking steps to address the issue and maintain a controlled flow of migration.
In response to challenges at the border, the US is sending a delegation led by Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Mexico on December 27 to discuss immigration and cooperate in finding solutions to the current situation.
