India’s veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has become the 14th Indian player to play 100 Test matches. He has added another big achievement in his career.
The fifth and final Test of the five-match series between India and England begins today at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala. Ravichandran Ashwin made the record of playing 100 Test matches as soon as he stepped on the field.
A special memento was presented to Ashwin by India’s head coach Rahul Dravid on the occasion.
India’s veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin became the second Indian bowler to do so by taking 500 Test wickets during the third Test against England at Rajkot. Anil Kumble of India has done this feat before him. The 37-year-old Ravichandran Ashwin is the third offspinner to achieve this feat, having been previously achieved by offspinners Nathan Lyon and Muttiah Muralitharan. Ashwin also joined bowlers like Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne, James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Anil Kumble, Glenn McGrath, Courtney Walsh in the exclusive club of 500 wicket takers in Test cricket.
Ravichandran Ashwin is the second bowler to complete 500 Test wickets in less than 100 Test matches. Before him, Muttiah Muralitharan had achieved this feat.
Ravichandran Ashwin made his debut in Test cricket in 2011, he has taken 507 Test wickets and scored 3309 runs in this format with five centuries and 14 fifties at a batting average of 26.47.
Only Nathan Lyon has taken more wickets than him in this format, who has taken 527 wickets.
Ashwin took five wickets in the Ranchi Test during the fourth Test against England, the 35th time he had done so. He also equaled Kumble’s record for the most five-wicket haul by an Indian in Test cricket with his 35th five-wicket haul.
India’s legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for the most international matches in the format of Test matches. He has played a total of 200 Test matches.
