Four people were killed, while three others were injured and many others were reported missing when a boat capsized in Jhelum river in Gandbal area of Srinagar district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday. The State Disaster Relief Force has launched a rescue operation for the missing passengers.
Officials said that the rope that was used to cross the river broke and the boat overturned. The region has experienced continuous heavy rains for the past few days, which has increased the water level in the river.
A rescue operation has been launched after the boat capsize incident and a team of State Disaster Response Force has been deployed at the spot.
Officials said that on getting information about the incident, an immediate rescue operation was launched by SDRF, police and people. The four people who have died have been identified as Razia (18), Shabir (23), Firdausa (30) and Gulzar (30).
The bodies of the victims have been recovered and medico-legal formalities are being completed and the three rescued have been taken to SMHS hospital in Srinagar, officials said. Doctors at the hospital confirmed that all the injured persons are being treated at the hospital.
The rescue operation has been started by SDRF, NDRF, Srinagar administration and police, which was monitored by Mandal Yukta Kashmir, IGP Kashmir, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar and SSP at Gandbal, Batwara.
On social media platform X, former CM of the state Omar Abdullah posted that there was a report of a boat capsizing in the river Jhelum at Batwara in Gandbal area of Srinagar district, which I am very concerned about. I hope and pray that all those on board this ship are safe and that they are rescued quickly.
