Hockey India has announced the 18-member squad for the upcoming Men’s Asia Cup, which will be held at the newly built Rajgir Hockey Stadium in Bihar from August 29 to September 7, 2025. The tournament holds extra significance this year as it also serves as the qualifier for the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands. India, placed in Pool A, will face Japan, China, and Kazakhstan in the group stage.
The Indian team will be led by drag-flick specialist and seasoned defender Harmanpreet Singh, who continues as captain. Alongside him, stalwarts like Amit Rohidas, Jarmanpreet Singh, and Jugraj Singh add stability to the defensive line. In goal, India has opted for the trusted pair of Krishan B Pathak and Suraj Karkera, both of whom have delivered consistent performances in recent international outings.
The midfield department looks strong with experienced campaigners Manpreet Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Hardik Singh, Rajinder Singh, and Raj Kumar Pal. Their role will be crucial in controlling the pace of play and providing creative build-ups for the attack. In the forward line, the likes of Mandeep Singh, Abhishek, Dilpreet Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, and Shilanand Lakra bring a mix of speed, skill, and finishing ability that will be vital in breaking down strong Asian defenses.
According to head coach Craig Fulton, the selection reflects a deliberate balance of experience and young talent. He emphasized that the squad has been built with “composure, resilience, and leadership” in mind, particularly since World Cup qualification is at stake. The inclusion of alternate athletes Nilam Sanjeep Xess and Selvam Karthi further adds depth to the team.
There were no major surprises in the announcement, as the core players from recent campaigns have retained their spots. This continuity, experts believe, could help India maintain stability and cohesion during high-pressure games. With the Asia Cup doubling as a pathway to the World Cup, expectations are high from the Men in Blue, who will aim not just to qualify but also to reclaim continental supremacy.
