Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has shared his early prediction for the top four teams likely to reach the playoffs in the Indian Premier League 2026 season. Based on the first round of matches, Pietersen believes Mumbai Indians (MI), Delhi Capitals (DC), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Punjab Kings (PBKS) are currently leading the race.
However, Pietersen cautioned that the scenario could change as the tournament progresses, especially if injuries impact team combinations and performance.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he noted that his selection was purely based on early observations and current form, adding that fitness concerns could significantly alter team standings in the coming weeks.
Concerns Around RCB
Pietersen also expressed doubts about the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). He highlighted weaknesses in their middle overs and spin department, along with concerns over the fitness of Josh Hazlewood. Emphasising the importance of bowling strength, he remarked that strong bowling units are often key to winning championships.
Strong Start for Top Teams
All four teams picked by Pietersen made a winning start to their campaigns:
- Mumbai Indians defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets in a high-scoring chase of 221 at Wankhede Stadium.
- Rajasthan Royals secured a convincing eight-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings in Guwahati.
- Punjab Kings edged past Gujarat Titans by three wickets, powered by an unbeaten 72 from Cooper Connolly.
- Delhi Capitals pulled off a remarkable win against Lucknow Super Giants, recovering from 26/4 to chase down 142. Sameer Rizvi led the comeback with an unbeaten 70, supported by Tristan Stubbs, who contributed 39*.
Upcoming Matches to Watch
Looking ahead, Axar Patel’s Delhi Capitals are set to face Mumbai Indians in Delhi. Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans will take on Rajasthan Royals in Ahmedabad.
On Sunday, Lucknow Super Giants will clash with Sunrisers Hyderabad, followed by a high-profile encounter between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings in Bengaluru.
As the tournament unfolds, Pietersen’s early predictions will be closely watched, though the unpredictable nature of the IPL means the playoff race is far from settled.
