US President Donald Trump made strong remarks about Iran as the country began funeral ceremonies for its late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Speaking at an event near Mount Rushmore, Trump claimed that recent US military operations had severely weakened Iran and said the country was now interested in reaching a settlement with Washington.
“We knocked the hell out of them,” Trump said, referring to Iran. He added that the United States had even delayed negotiations out of respect for Iran’s funeral ceremonies, saying, “They’re dying to settle. We gave them a week off for a funeral because we’re nice.”
Iran officially began six days of national mourning on July 4, with funeral ceremonies taking place across the country. The final burial is expected to be held in the holy city of Mashhad on July 9.
