Heavy rain continued to lash Mumbai, Thane, and several parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region on Friday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) retaining a red alert for the region from July 4 to July 6.
The IMD has warned of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places during this period, raising concerns about waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and delays in local train and road transport services. Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
Since Thursday night, many parts of Mumbai have witnessed continuous rainfall accompanied by strong winds. Areas in South Mumbai, the western suburbs, and parts of Thane reported significant water accumulation on roads during the morning hours. Municipal teams have been deployed to clear drains and monitor vulnerable locations.
The IMD stated that the intense rainfall is being driven by a strong monsoon system over the west coast. Forecasts indicate that heavy to very heavy rain is likely to persist across Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts over the weekend.
Civic authorities have asked citizens to stay updated through official weather advisories and emergency alerts. Fishermen have also been advised not to venture into the Arabian Sea due to rough sea conditions and strong winds expected along the Maharashtra coast.
Schools and offices remain open for now, but officials said the situation is being reviewed continuously based on rainfall intensity and local conditions. Emergency response teams, including disaster management personnel, are on standby across the region as the red alert remains in effect through Sunday.
