Rajya Sabha MP and senior Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Manoj Jha has approached the Supreme Court seeking an independent investigation into the alleged police firing on NEET aspirants during protests in Bihar. The petition demands the registration of First Information Reports (FIRs) against police personnel accused of using excessive force against students.
The plea comes in the wake of widespread demonstrations by NEET aspirants across Bihar, where students gathered to protest alleged irregularities and demand greater transparency in the examination process. During one such protest, police reportedly resorted to force, including baton charges and firing, leading to injuries among several demonstrators.
In his petition, Jha argued that the actions of the police amounted to a serious violation of the fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution. He contended that the use of force against unarmed students exercising their democratic right to protest was arbitrary and disproportionate.
The Rajya Sabha MP has requested the apex court to direct the Bihar government to register FIRs against officers allegedly responsible for the firing and to ensure a fair, impartial investigation. He has also sought compensation and appropriate medical assistance for students who sustained injuries during the incident.
The petition emphasizes the need for accountability among law enforcement agencies and calls for judicial oversight to ensure that such incidents are thoroughly investigated. It also seeks guidelines to regulate police action during peaceful public demonstrations, particularly those involving students.
The protests in Bihar have drawn significant political attention, with opposition parties criticizing the state government over its handling of the demonstrations.
