The conflict in West Asia intensified on Thursday (July 30, 2026) after the United States carried out a series of large-scale military strikes against Iran in response to Tehran’s attempted missile attacks on U.S. military bases in Jordan.

Iranian Reports of Civilian Impact
Iranian state media reported explosions in several areas, including the island of Qeshm and Khuzestan province. According to Iranian officials, multiple people were injured during the attacks.
The Fars News Agency later claimed that a U.S. strike on a residential home in Qeshm killed three members of a family, including a two-year-old child, while two other children were injured. Earlier reports had stated that two civilians were wounded during strikes in the region.
In Piranshahr, near Iran’s western border, Iranian television reported another missile strike but said it landed in an uninhabited area and caused no casualties.
Conflict Expands Across the Region
The latest exchange has raised fears that the conflict could once again spread across the Middle East after several days of relative calm.
In Iraq, U.S. and Saudi forces reportedly conducted coordinated strikes against Iran-backed militia positions, resulting in the deaths of several militia fighters and Iranian advisers.
Meanwhile, Israel accused the Iran-backed Hezbollah group of violating an existing ceasefire agreement, adding further uncertainty to the regional security situation.
Diplomacy Faces Fresh Setback
Efforts to restart diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran appear to have stalled.
Although President Trump recently suggested that Iran was interested in returning to negotiations, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister denied those claims, stating that Tehran had not requested renewed talks in more than two weeks.
The renewed military action has further reduced hopes of an immediate diplomatic breakthrough.
Maritime Security Concerns Rise
The conflict also affected maritime security in the region. Drone attacks triggered fires aboard two gas-related vessels near Egypt’s Mediterranean port of Damietta. One vessel was a U.S.-owned floating gas storage facility, while the other was a Greek-owned tanker. No injuries were reported, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Separately, the QatarEnergy-controlled LNG tanker Al Areesh successfully passed through the Strait of Hormuz, becoming the first tanker operated by the company to exit the strategic waterway in nearly three weeks.
CENTCOM Confirms Completion of Operation
Late Wednesday, CENTCOM announced that U.S. forces had completed a “heavy wave” of strikes against Iran, describing the operation as retaliation for Iran’s attempted missile attacks on American troops stationed in the Middle East.
Military officials said the operation targeted dozens of IRGC facilities, including command headquarters, missile infrastructure, drone facilities, and coastal defense systems.
