At least 14 people were killed and more than two dozen others injured after a suicide bomber targeted a peace rally in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The attack took place near the Kabal Police Station in the Swat district, where hundreds of people had gathered to demand stronger action against rising militant violence in the region.
According to officials, the bomber detonated explosives as participants were dispersing from the rally, triggering a powerful blast that caused widespread panic. Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the attack, calling it a cowardly act of terrorism. They expressed condolences to the families of the victims, directed authorities to provide the best possible medical care to the injured, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eliminating terrorism from the country.
The Swat Valley, once a stronghold of militant groups before a major military operation drove them out, has witnessed a resurgence of extremist activity in recent years. Local residents have repeatedly organized peace rallies to demand improved security and stronger action against militants, making the latest attack particularly devastating for the community.
The bombing is the latest in a series of terrorist incidents to hit Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, underscoring the persistent security challenges facing the country despite ongoing counterterrorism operations.
