Ranchi: The ongoing agitation by candidates preparing for Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) examinations intensified on Monday after a march towards the State Assembly in Ranchi turned confrontational. The protesters have been demanding action over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations, including demands for cancellation of examinations and a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe.
The situation escalated when security personnel used water cannons, tear gas and batons to disperse protesters near the Assembly. Police officials said some personnel were injured after stones were allegedly thrown during the march. Authorities have indicated that CCTV footage will be examined to establish what happened during the confrontation.
Students Demand Probe Into Recruitment Examinations
The protesters have been raising concerns over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations conducted for government recruitment in Jharkhand. Their demands include cancellation of the disputed examinations, a transparent recruitment process and an independent investigation into allegations of paper leaks and other malpractice.
The agitation has continued for several days, with students and job aspirants maintaining that government recruitment examinations must be conducted in a manner that guarantees fairness and equal opportunity.
Police Action Sparks Political Reaction
Monday’s confrontation triggered a strong political response. The Jharkhand unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced a statewide bandh for Tuesday, August 11, protesting what it described as excessive police action against students.
BJP leaders said the party would stand with the protesting aspirants and demanded a CBI investigation into alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations. The party also criticised the state government over its handling of the protest.
The bandh affected normal life in several parts of the State on Tuesday, with reports of disruptions to transport and commercial activity in some areas.
Student Leader Hospitalised
The protest also saw concern over the health of student and political leader Devendra Nath Mahto, who had been on a hunger strike for nine days in support of the aspirants. His health deteriorated and he was subsequently admitted to hospital in Ranchi.
His hospitalisation added to pressure on the government to address the protesters’ demands and find a way to resolve the standoff.
Government Open to Dialogue
The State government has indicated that it is willing to engage with the protesting students. Officials have maintained that discussions can help resolve the issues raised by the aspirants, while the protesters continue to press for stronger guarantees and an independent investigation.
The dispute has now developed into a wider political confrontation, with the BJP backing the students’ agitation and the government facing growing pressure over the recruitment examination controversy.
Recruitment Row Gains Momentum
The Jharkhand protests come amid broader concerns among young job seekers over the credibility of government recruitment examinations. With government jobs attracting a large number of applicants, allegations of paper leaks, cheating or other irregularities have become a major source of frustration among aspirants.
The developments in Ranchi have therefore turned the JPSC-JSSC issue into a significant political and social controversy in Jharkhand. For now, the focus remains on whether the government and protesting candidates can reach an agreement and whether an independent investigation will be ordered into the allegations.
