Former Sri Lankan all-rounder Farveez Maharoof believes Sri Lanka have a strong opportunity to challenge India in the upcoming two-Test series at home, but stressed that the hosts will need greater consistency in the longer format.
Maharoof identified veteran batter Dinesh Chandimal as one of the key players who could play a decisive role for Sri Lanka against India. Chandimal has an impressive record against the Indian team, having scored 750 runs in eight Tests and 16 innings at an average of 50.00, including two centuries and three fifties.
Speaking ahead of the series, Maharoof said the upcoming contest represents one of Sri Lanka’s best opportunities to defeat India, particularly with the series being played on home soil.
However, he cautioned that Sri Lanka cannot afford inconsistency if they are to compete with a strong Indian side over five days. The former all-rounder stressed the importance of sustained performances across batting, bowling and fielding rather than relying on individual brilliance.
Chandimal’s experience could therefore prove particularly valuable. Having played extensively against India, the veteran batter is familiar with the challenge posed by the visitors and could provide stability in Sri Lanka’s middle order.
Maharoof also acknowledged that India enter the series better prepared, despite potential vulnerabilities against spin. With Sri Lanka playing at home, however, the former cricketer believes the hosts have an opportunity to exploit familiar conditions and put pressure on the visitors.
