Former Australia Test batter Will Pucovski has launched legal action against his former school, Brighton Grammar, alleging that a head injury he suffered as a teenager was improperly handled and ultimately contributed to the end of his cricket career. Pucovski, who retired from professional cricket at 27 after a series of concussions, has filed a statement of claim in the Supreme Court of Victoria.
Head Injury At 16
The legal case centres on an incident in 2014, when Pucovski was 16 and attending Brighton Grammar in Melbourne. According to the claim, he suffered a concussion after his head collided with a teammate’s knee during what was described as an aggressively physical Australian rules football training session.
Pucovski alleges that the school failed to follow appropriate concussion protocols and did not provide the level of care required after the incident. The allegations have not yet been tested in court, and Brighton Grammar has yet to file its defence.
13 Documented Concussions
The incident became significant in retrospect as Pucovski went on to suffer repeated concussions during his cricket career. According to reports, he sustained 13 documented concussions before an independent medical panel recommended that he stop playing professional cricket.
The repeated head injuries disrupted a career that had once been viewed as one of the most promising batting prospects in Australian cricket. Pucovski ultimately announced his retirement in April 2025 at the age of 27.
Promising Test Career Cut Short
Pucovski made his Test debut for Australia against India in Sydney in January 2021. He scored 62 in his first innings, offering a glimpse of the talent that had earned him national selection.
However, his career was repeatedly interrupted by concussion-related setbacks. His struggles with head injuries meant he was unable to establish himself as a regular member of Australia’s Test side despite his considerable batting ability.
His premature retirement at 27 brought an early end to a career that had promised much more.
Legal Battle Begins
Pucovski’s lawsuit argues that the 2014 injury at Brighton Grammar was an important starting point in the series of problems that eventually affected his professional career. His legal team is seeking to establish that the school failed in its duty of care toward him as a student.
The case is now before the Victorian Supreme Court. Brighton Grammar has not yet presented its defence, meaning the allegations remain claims rather than findings of fact.
