A fresh wave of Russian missile and drone strikes hit Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight, killing at least 12 people and injuring 20 others, including two children, according to Ukrainian officials. The latest barrage has intensified concerns over the continuing attacks on the Ukrainian capital and critical infrastructure.
Among the deadliest incidents was a strike on a railway depot operated by Ukraine’s state railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia. Six of the people killed in Kyiv were railway workers, according to officials. Fires broke out across three districts of the capital following the overnight attacks, while emergency crews worked through the night to rescue victims and contain the damage.
Railway Workers Among Those Killed
The attack on the railway facilities caused significant damage to workshops and other infrastructure. Ukrainian officials said the strike involved ballistic missiles as well as attack drones, with the railway site among the locations hit.
Ukrzaliznytsia has played a crucial role in keeping Ukraine’s transport network functioning throughout the war, transporting passengers, humanitarian supplies and essential goods. Railway facilities and workers have previously been targeted during the conflict, making the latest casualties particularly significant.
Emergency services continued operations after the strikes, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky saying nearly 350 rescue workers were involved in efforts across Kyiv and the surrounding region. He said Russia had launched a large number of drones and ballistic missiles during the overnight assault.
Boryspil Also Hit
The attacks extended beyond Kyiv into the wider Kyiv region. In Boryspil, a residential building was struck, resulting in deaths and injuries. Local authorities reported damage to a five-storey apartment building, while emergency crews evacuated residents and dealt with fires and debris.
Ukrainian authorities also said an Indian national was among those killed in the wider attacks. The man, who was reportedly 26 years old, died in Boryspil, according to Ukraine’s Interior Minister.
Russia Says It Targeted Military and Energy Facilities
Russia’s Defence Ministry described the operation as a “massive strike using high-precision weapons”. Moscow said its forces were targeting Ukraine’s military-industrial and fuel-energy facilities.
Ukraine, however, reported casualties and damage to civilian and railway infrastructure. The differing accounts reflect the continuing dispute between the two sides over the nature and targets of attacks during the war.
Sixth Day of Sustained Attacks
The latest barrage comes amid several consecutive days of Russian drone and missile attacks on Kyiv. Ukrainian officials say the capital and other regions have faced repeated overnight assaults, placing additional pressure on air-defence systems and emergency services.
The new attacks also follow a deadly strike on a weapons depot in the Kyiv region on Friday, where explosions killed 38 people and triggered further detonations involving ammunition, mines and drones.
Wider Escalation
The latest attacks come as diplomatic efforts continue to seek an end to the Russia-Ukraine war. On Monday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to move towards ending the conflict, warning that every additional day of war represents a setback for humanity.
At the same time, Ukraine and Russia continue to exchange long-range drone attacks. Russian authorities reported a Ukrainian strike in the Belgorod region, while a separate drone attack reportedly caused a fire at the major Russian Baltic port of Ust-Luga.
With Kyiv facing another night of heavy bombardment, the latest casualties underline the continuing human cost of the war and the vulnerability of essential infrastructure and workers who keep the Ukrainian capital operating during the conflict.
